First; Thanks for PortaMx  :)

I am using SMF 2.0 RC4 Extended by PortaMx v0.990

This is the website:  http://honorplatoon.com

I want to design and experiment with the site's background, somehow i assume i have to edit the index.css of the current theme in the admin section.
Am i correct on this one?

Anyway, my goal is to have a background image like being used here (example), where the background image flotes into a backgound collor or even maintain the grayscale background collor it has now
Example: http://www.164th.us/home/news.php

So Question;

Do i need to edit the index.css and what would the code look like?
Or do i need another approache?

Reguards,
Guard.

The top portion of the background (with the gradient) is usually a small graphic the length of the gradient and usually just a few pixels wide and it is repeated across the width of the web page. The bottom portion is usually just a color background that matches the darkest part of the gradient and is define in the index.css. Search for "background". You would need to replace the gradient image with the image of your choice and then have it to not repeat in the index.css.

All images they the default theme use, are defined in ONE image. The images are positioned by a offset (left - top).
For rounded edges it's need a very complexe css and that works not good with horizontal gradients.
Look at the default theme index.css and the image file /Themes/default/images/theme/main_block.png.
Note that this is a Alpha-8 converted png ...

Many are stubborn in relation to the way, but less in relation to the target.
