I see not PortaMx v0.92.0 install. The v0.93.0 is only a upgrade.

After succes install .. use default theme and english language.
Then, in the ACP you see a section PortaMx - Settings Manager and Blocks Manager.

I've installed PortaMx v0.94.7 with my SMF 2.0 Beta 4 installation.  I've read through many posts in this support forum but alas still cannot see any link or section in the Admin area to manage PortaMx.

Can you please help me work out what I've done wrong?

PortaMx v0.94.7 is the only Package that I have installed on my SMF installation that I'm currently testing as a replacement for my current vBulletin 3.7.3/vbPortal installation.

Are all the files there from the zip file? are your permissions set right on the server?
It sounds to me as if it's not installed properly.

mmm...I think you're both right there.  I've just checked a couple of directories against what's listed in the doco and they're not correct.  I'll go through and make the changes manually.

What permissions do the directories require?

I've gone through my installation and found that there were 2 files missing -

  • Themes/default/highslide/highslide-full.packed.js

  • Themes/default/languages/PortaMx/Block/show_attach.english.php

I've created them manually and added them to the server.

I only have one modification package installed:
1.     PortaMx v0.94.7      0.947

I've attached a dump of the files in the .zip package.

This is a test site so I'm happy for you to have a look at the Admin area of the SMF/PortaMx setup if you think that'll help.  Let me know and I'll PM you the details.

The HighSlide package is't developed with the 0.947 release.
The show_attach is missed, but that is not the problem.

I have just tried to install, and the directories are not being created. Unpack the archive and upload all the dirs and files please. Please do not install other mods untill you get this working. I have uninstalled all other mods for the time being.

I installed the other mods to see if they experienced similar problems - they didn't which makes me wonder why this mod isn't installing correctly.  This makes me believe that the problem is with the mod and not my server.

Thanks for your help, but if everything needs to be installed manually I'd rather not go any further with my testing.

one more thing, you should not have all your files set to 777!

I changed the permissions on many directories to 777 to see if that would help to get PortaMx working.  I thought I'd wait until the problem was solved before changing them back.

Thanks again for your assistance.

I've just installed SimplePortal and didn't experience any problem - the menu appeared in the Admin area straight away.

Maybe I'll try PortaMx again sometime in the future.

This is going to be a sticking point for many people when it comes to this portal. Personally I'm not intimidated by having to do a manual installation on my server as I've reached the point where I'm confident I can handle it. Template edits, etc don't bother me at all and I'm happy to deal with them if the results are going to be worthwhile.

However, not everyone is that confident and other portals will  install on the same servers via the SMF Package Manager. These other portals also create files and folders (as well as editing existing files) as part of their installation process. This also applies to many other (non-portal) SMF mods.

What this means is that the installation problems many people seem to be getting are not caused by the package manager itself or by the server configuration as such. There is something about the installation procedure for PortaMx that makes it incompatible with a lot of servers. I think that if Tiny Portal and Simple Portal (and most other mods) can deal with this and install via the package manager then PortaMx will have to be able to do the same before most people will be interested.

Its not just a question of the initial installation either. Maintenance and upgrading are much easier for an admin if all packages are capable of quick and easy installation and uninstallation via the package manager. I really think this should be looked at in great detail. I know PortaMX is technically still at RC1 and for RC1 it's fantastic. I'm hoping by the time it goes final it'll be even better.
Using Internet Explorer 6 on the internet is like urinating in a public swimming pool.
It's rude, there's no excuse for it, and anyone who does it should be ashamed of themselves.
